Prayer

O Lord! Make this youth radiant, and confer Thy bounty upon this poor creature. Bestow upon him knowledge, grant him added strength at the break of every morn and guard him within the shelter of Thy protection so that he may be freed from error, may devote himself to the service of Thy Cause, may guide the wayward, lead the hapless, free the captives and awaken the heedless, that all may be blessed with Thy remembrance and praise. Thou art the Mighty and the Powerful.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Baha’i Prayers, p. 36)

Quotation

Hello how are you

Hello how are you

I’m fine, thank you

I’m fine, thank you

This is a virtue that I know

Courtesy helps me grow and grow

Magic Words

When someone gives me something I say “thank you”

When someone helps me out I say “thank you”

Chorus:

I can see it makes them happy when I say it so politely.

Yes, courtesy means to say my magic words.

If I spill my drink at lunch I say “I’m sorry”

If I hurt someone’s feelings I say “I’m sorry”

If I bump into someone I say “excuse me”

If I need to interrupt I say “excuse me”

Comments about the lesson

Wow so many different ways according to the situation you are in, it was interesting to think of how much courtesy does come up throughout the day. I found explaining to my son that courtesy is being concerned with how others are feeling was a good way to explain the various differences in courteous behavior.

We were super busy this month so had a Marathon Radiant Hearts day, completing over 5 activities in one morning. Usually we do two or three at a time, but I was surprised how the boys really lapped up all the activities this time. Perhaps they are getting old enough to concentrate for a bit longer (they are close to 4 years old and 18 months).

We have been trying hard to use Magic Words this month – and I’m surprised how much I myself am not in the habit of using them. When I’m in a rush or a bit frustrated, I have noticed I forget to say “please” and my son has definitely picked up on this and appointed himself as my personal reminder. It’s actually been quite helpful to have someone remind me. 🙂

Working on taking turns while someone else talks is something we try to work on a lot, due to my son’s very outgoing personality. So Daily Activity #8 came up quite a few times not only with using a phone but also just general talking or telling a story, giving someone your full attention and waiting until they complete what they are saying. (Again something I need to work on myself!)

We talked a lot about being courteous during prayers (Daily Activity #12) in preparation for our community’s Cluster Reflection Meeting which happened mid-month. The devotions were quite long and it wasn’t smooth sailing, but I think the preparation did help a bit.

"Having morning family prayers is something I grew up with, but having a systematic approach that infuses Baha’u’llah’s words, virtues, and music into your morning devotions really carries that spirit through the rest of the day..." Read more on our Testimonials page.
